The one that got away: growing tech companies in Alberta

I have a soft spot for tech and bio tech companies. So this particular story, The One That Got Away: Wi-Lan left Alberta to make it big in Ottawa. Will other tech start-ups stay? (March 2012, Alberta Venture), was a bittersweet one to research and write.

Featuring Jim Skippen, CEO, Wi-Lan Inc., Kathryn Hughes, Wi-Lan’s director of marketing and communications, Terry Hughes, head of market development for Calgary-based Wmode and managing director of San Francisco-based AppCarousel, and Tara Kelly, founder and president of Splice Software Inc.

The quote that says it all:

“I love my Calgary and I love my Alberta, and I’m proud to be Albertan. And I want to live here and to succeed here, but I don’t want to be here more than I want to grow my organization. It’s not the right reason to stay just because you love the town.” Tara Kelly
