The November 2012 Legal Eagles (Alberta Venture) was, by editorial request, supposed to be something edgy on intellectual property. Preferably patents. I decided to torment IP lawyers by asking them to answer the question, “Do patents stifle innovation?” Note to all and sundry: if you ever want to rile up an IP lawyer, ask them this question and watch the sparks fly. The column features Terry Kuharchuk, a patent prosecutor with Emery Jamieson in Edmonton, and Dawn Mains, an intellectual property lawyer with Heenan Blaikie in Calgary.
